Governor Doyle’s office recently announced that Kaukauna Utilities will receive a $16,667 Site Assessment Grant. The grant is part of a state-wide program that funds projects to begin the process of redeveloping urban sites that are abandoned, idle, or underutilized because of real or perceived contamination issues.
The money is awarded through the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and will be used to perform a Phase II Environmental Assessment of the Tellulah Canal at the former John Street generating facility along the Fox River in Appleton.
“The grant will help us evaluate the contamination at the site and what needs to be done to prepare the site for redevelopment,” stated General Manager Jeff Feldt. “The strategic location of the property along the river near Tellulah Park makes the site an ideal spot for development.”
The hydro generating facility has been shut down and the buildings removed because of safety and maintenance concerns. Kaukauna Utilities will retain all water rights.
