The Public Service Commission (PSC) approved an interim rate order on April 12, authorizing
KU to increase electric rates approximately 8.1% across all rate classes. As the interim rate order has not been formally issued by the PSC, it is premature for Kaukauna Utilities to comment further as the formal order will contain numerous order points relative to the rate increase that Kaukauna Utilities will be required to implement.
Please note that new rates will not go into effect until after formal notice is received from the PSC which could be as early as May 1 or as late as June 1.
Although the interim rate order is an 8.1% across-the-board increase, we do believe that if a customer were to compare their electric bills after the new rates go into effect with their electric bill from the same period in 2017, the cost per kWh will be less than the 8.1% increase authorized by the PSC.
We are encouraged rates will be less than predicted mainly due to two factors; a larger amount of power produced by Kaukauna Utilities hydro-electric power plants being allocated to customers which is less costly than purchased power and, the pass through of savings associated with new tax laws with respect to wholesale power purchased for our customers from taxable entities.
